    Testing Strategies

General AHSGE testing tips for students!

    1. Get a good night's rest to be alert and ready to perform your best.
    2. Eat Breakfast.
    3. Do not get in a hurry--the test is not timed.
    4. Following directions is a major part of the exam. Watch for clue words such as "best answer," "correct," or "incorrect." Be on guard for changes in the directions. Look for "key words"--one word could make a difference in the answer choice.
    5. You may write on the test booklet. Sometimes it helps to underline, cross out, or star items.
    6. Be careful not to get the answer key out of sequence. In other words, be sure to bubble in the letter for the right item number.
    7. It is important to narrow answer choices through the process of elimination. Choosing an answer will be easier if you can narrow the choices to two; this will give you a fifty-fifty chance of being correct.
    8. Never leave a test item unanswered--a guess is better than no answer at all.
    9. On the Reading test, it is best to reread the passage as many times as needed to determine or find an answer to a question.
    10. On the Math test you should perform a check of your answers when it is possible--this practice will increase the number of correct answers.
    11. Remember that when given maps, timelines, or graphs to study them carefully--the answer is right there in front of you!
    12. Go into the testing environment with a positive attitude! Believe in yourself and trust your instincts!
